Carbon Measurement

Overview

The first step in any carbon management strategy is to Measure your Carbon Footprint

All businesses are responsible to some degree for the emission of greenhouse gases.

Think about the activities of your company:

  • Are you involved in a production process that uses fossil fuels for energy?
  • Do you run a fleet of vehicles?
  • Are you a heavy user of electricity for lighting, heating, air conditioning or for running your equipment?

It’s inevitable that by simply conducting your business you are emitting green house gases into our atmosphere

Green Carbon can calculate your emissions.  The result is your ‘carbon footprint’.

Why would I want to measure my company's carbon footprint?

Measuring your carbon footprint is the first step in your organisation becoming part of the solution to climate change.

Value for your company:

  • Cost savings through managing resources and implementing good environmental practice
  • Enables you to set targets to reduce emissions
  • Enables your company to report on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission performance
  • Identify areas of process improvement within your organisation
  • Generate great PR through communicating your environmental successes
  • Improve reputation with customers and potential customers
  • Broader market opportunities - differentiates your products and brands
  • Good for staff morale and attracts high-calibre employees
  • Companies are making supply chain selection based on environmental factors
  • Valued by your ethical investors and potential investors
  • Prepares your business for future legislative changes
  • Demonstrate leadership in sustainable business practices, thus increasing market share
  • Independent third party assessment adds credibility

Options and Costs

Option One - an ESTIMATION of your companies carbon footprint

In this option, we will estimate your carbon footprint with the aim of capturing the majority of emissions, but may miss out some smaller impact areas such as general waste where measurement of these areas will be time-consuming and expensive, and is not likely to materially impact the final result. For companies, at a minimum, we will measure the C02 emissions from: Fossil Fuels, Air miles and Electricity, which for most service based businesses make up the majority of emissions. Measurement will be done according to best practices, but for efficiency, some aspects of the GHG protocol and ISO standards may be left out.

The general goal of this type of audit will be to give you an estimation of your Carbon Footprint that would be within plus or minus 10% of the figure that we would achieve with a comprehensive audit, but with much reduced costs. Often the largest areas of Greenhouse Gas emissions such as fuel, electricity, and manufacturing are very easy and quick to gather and calculate, and then the majority of time (and expense), is spent on other areas.

The advantage of this type of audit is that it is relatively quick, easy and cheap, however the disadvantage is that this type of audit cannot be used in any 'Carbon Neutral' claims, as it is not a standards-compliant audit. If you are simply seeking for a rough idea of your organisations carbon footp
rint, then this is an affordable option.
Costs are $500 + GST to set up an account with Green Carbon (if yo do not already have one), and then $150 + GST per hour for data collection and report writing. Total costs are generally around $1,000 - $2,000 + GST, but can be higher for larger or more complex organisations.

Once you have an estimation of your organisation's Carbon Footprint, you can purchase the recommended amount of Carbon Credits from Green Carbon and enable your organisation to become 'Green Carbon: Carbon Friendly Certified.'

Option Two - a thorough and rigorous ASSESSMENT of your companies carbon footprint

In this option, we will measure your organisation’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory level to a world class standard. It shall be prepared in accordance to international best practice standards; The Greenhouse Gas Protocol; a Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, prepared by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and The World Resources Institute; and ISO 14064-1:2006, the International Standard for Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals.

The advantage of this assessment is that it gives you a recognised Certification from us. It can be used as the first step in becoming properly 'Carbon Neutral', and will be recognised as having been done to all the worlds best practices in this area.
The disadvantage of this option is that it can be much more time consuming and expensive than the Estimation option.
Costs are $500 + GST to set up an account with Green Carbon (if you don't already have one), and then $150 + GST per hour for data collection and report writing. Total costs are often around $5,000 + GST, but can be as high as $20,000 + GST or more depending on the size of the organisation and the complexity of the measurements required. Under this option, you can have our report independently verified or validated by a third party organisation, such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers. This shall be provided at an additional fee but is highly recommended by us if the carbon footprint established from your GHG Inventory is to be reported in shareholder reports, or used for making decisions with regard to any future carbon liability issues or opportunities of the company.

Once you have had your Carbon Footprint measured by us under this option, we will certify you as being 'Green Carbon: Carbon Measured Certified', which is to say that you have rigorously undergone a comprehensive assessment of your Carbon Footprint.
